FortressFire Joins FM: A New Chapter for Wildfire Loss Prevention

FortressFire has been acquired by FM, one of the world’s leading commercial property insurers, and will continue as a wholly owned but independent division. For an insurer built on the conviction that the majority of property loss is preventable, the move is a powerful endorsement of FortressFire’s founding premise: that wildfire loss is not inevitable and can be prevented at the level of the individual structure. For customers and partners, the work continues uninterrupted — now with deeper resources behind it.

This is a defining milestone for FortressFire. We’re proud to share that FortressFire has been acquired by FM, one of the leading commercial property insurers in the world. FortressFire will continue as a wholly owned but independent division — same brand, same team, same mission — now backed by the capital, research depth, and engineering expertise to advance our work at a scale we could only have imagined when we started.

You can read FM’s announcement here, and Insurance Business covered the news here.

A shared belief that loss is preventable

Six years ago, FortressFire was founded on a simple but stubborn conviction: wildfire loss is not inevitable. While much of the industry leaned on blunt instruments — policy cancellations, premium increases, and pushing risk elsewhere — we set out to prove that wildfire risk can be measured, priced, mitigated, and monitored with precision, using physics and machine learning at the level of the individual structure.

FM has spent nearly two centuries proving a closely related truth across the broader property risk domain: that the majority of property loss is preventable by focusing on risk mitigation solutions and building resilience. With nearly 2,000 engineers working across 14 countries and one in every four Fortune 500 companies among its policyholders, FM has built its business on engineering-led loss prevention rather than risk transfer alone. That shared belief is what makes this the right home for what we’ve built. FM didn’t just see FortressFire as a technology to acquire — it recognized an approach that already reflected its own engineering and underwriting ethos. As FM Chairman and CEO Malcolm Roberts put it, FortressFire shares FM’s belief in the power of data-driven, location-based risk mitigation to help clients better understand and manage wildfire exposure. For us, that’s the strongest possible validation of the premise our team has pursued from day one.

Why this milestone matters now

The timing is not incidental. Wildfire losses continue to mount worldwide: the Swiss Re Institute estimated global insured catastrophe losses reached $107 billion in 2025, with wildfires and severe storms driving the large majority of that total. In response, the industry is moving decisively toward property-level analytics — more than 20 U.S. states now accept AI-driven wildfire models in rate filings, and the gap between carriers using coarse geographic risk segmentation and those with structure-level modeling continues to widen.

Industry observers have framed the acquisition as a signal of where the market is heading — a recognition that pricing fire-exposed property well requires data infrastructure at the level of the individual structure, not just capacity. That’s precisely the capability FortressFire was built to deliver, and precisely why property owners who undertake and document their mitigation — cleared vegetation, structure hardening, scheduled inspections, continuous monitoring — are increasingly the ones who access the most competitive terms.

What this means for our customers and partners

If you rely on FortressFire today, the most important thing to know is this: our work together continues, uninterrupted.

  • Our platform and services remain fully available. Aerial Risk Reports, Onsite Inspections, Remote Monitoring + Alerts, and our structure-level analytics continue as before.
  • Your points of contact stay the same. The team you know continues to serve you, now with deeper resources behind it.
  • We remain an open platform. Operating as an independent division means FortressFire continues to serve the entire ecosystem — insurers, reinsurers, brokers, real estate professionals, lenders, and property owners alike.
  • The science keeps getting stronger. FM’s research capability and engineering heritage add depth to the capabilities you already depend on.

For property owners navigating an increasingly difficult insurance market, this milestone reinforces what FortressFire has always offered: a clear, science-based path to understanding your wildfire risk, reducing it through verified mitigation, and improving your path to insurability.

The mission accelerates

This is not a finish line. It’s liftoff.

The work ahead is exactly the work we set out to do — defining how wildfire risk is assessed, managed, priced, mitigated, and protected, and doing it at a scale that can meaningfully move the market. With FM, structure-level wildfire intelligence moves from the edge of the industry to the center of how leading insurers engineer risk out of the property.

We’re grateful to our customers, partners, and team members who believed in this vision and helped prove it. To everyone who has been part of the FortressFire story so far: thank you. The best chapters are still ahead.

FortressFire brings together wildfire scientists, insurance professionals, technologists, and fire mitigation experts to help protect homes, businesses, and communities from wildfire loss. Most wildfire risk tools estimate how likely a fire is to happen. FortressFire goes further — determining whether a structure will ignite, and then helping prevent it.
